Edinburgh artist’s stunning Ukrainian paintings raise hundreds for disaster fund


An Edinburgh artist has produced a series of beautiful paintings in a bid to help the disaster relief effort in Ukraine.

Damian Callan has already raised over £1,800 for the victims of the crisis, selling his evocative and emotional artworks for £120 per painting.

The first set of Collages for Ukraine proved so popular that all the works sold out within days of going on sale.

Damian will be showing a second set of paintings this weekend in his studio and online, with all proceeds again going to the humanitarian relief effort in Ukraine.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Damian said: “I produced a series of collages to raise money for the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

“The images show my children and their cousins ​​and friends enjoying a childhood without the horrors of war.

“They are roughly A4 in size and mounted in a simple IKEA frame.

“The cost is £120 and ALL money received will be sent to the Disaster Emergency Committee.

“The images are based on the Ukrainian flag: I tore two pieces of blue and yellow paper that come together with a horizontal edge in the middle.

“On these are collages of figures torn from Scottish road maps. These are then drawn in ink and colored in oil pastel.

“I think they succeed in placing the children in a sort of Ukrainian landscape – the origin of the flag is revisited as the figures stand or move through fields of yellow wheat and stand out against the blue sky”.
