Participating is easier than ever with virtual submissions and the gallery

Congressman Brian Higgins invites high school students living in the 26th congressional district to participate in the annual Congressional Art Contest. The winning piece from each district is sent to Washington, DC, and displayed in the Capitol building.

“In the past, we’ve been inspired by the incredible creativity of talented young artists here in Western New York,” Higgins said. “We encourage students to share their work again this year.”

This year, it is not necessary to hand-deliver the works of art. All submissions will be accepted virtually and featured in an online gallery. Simply upload the artwork to bit.ly/NY26Art and complete the student release form. The deadline for submission is April 20.

Western New York-themed artwork is encouraged, but all original artwork that meets the guidelines is welcome. Submissions will be posted in a virtual gallery on Higgins’ website beginning April 27, with additional viewing opportunities through the congressman’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite piece until May 4.

Local leaders of the Western New York arts community will select the winning work to be sent to the nation’s capital. The winning student and one guest will also receive free tickets from Southwest Airline to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony in June, along with other winners from across the country. Additional prizes will be awarded to the first and second runners-up, as well as to the top voter via the online gallery.
