QUINCY (WGEM) – The art gallery at John Wood Community College Heath Center is home to works of art by John Steinkamp. The art exhibition is open until Friday, February 18. The gallery is open during regular university hours: Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
According to JWCC, Steinkamp is a Quincy professional who has served the community in several different roles. Holder of a Bachelor of Applied Science in Graphic Arts, he has worked with advertising agencies, television stations, non-profit organizations and entrepreneurs.
JWCC has stated that Steinkamp is a self-taught oil painter. In this collection he displays his most current level of skill with an emphasis on formal portrait work in oils. His dedication to depicting a likeness of figure is coupled with refinement in brushstroke and color harmony.
“This exhibition is the result of the refinement of my oil painting technique,” Steinkamp said. “Themes and self-expression took precedence over studying the works of other accomplished painters. My use of the limited Zorn palette of titanium white, yellow ochre, vermilion and ivory black was an attempt to develop the skill of color mixing. Even limiting my attention to technique alone, thought and emotion still poured out in the form of journaling and conversations with friends and family that are depicted in many of the pieces. Experience has become an influence on both quality and quantity.
The JWCC added that a reception will be held on Wednesday, February 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the gallery. An artist talk will take place at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The art exhibition is open until Friday, February 18.
According to JWCC, some works of art are for sale. A portion of each sale is retained by the college to support the gallery. Please visit: www.jwcc.edu/event/john-steinkamp-exhibit-in-the-heath-center-gallery/.
