Square Enix’s New JRPG The DioField Chronicle Gets Tons of Screenshots, Artwork, and Details

Following yesterday’s surprise announcement of tactical JRPG The DioField Chronicle, the Western and Japanese branches of Square Enix have released tons of details, artwork, and screenshots.

First, we start with a look at history:

“The era of myths gives way to an era of great upheavals…

The world of men is mired in an era of war that has raged for years.

A band of elite mercenaries calling themselves Blue Fox arise amid the flames and chaos, their fates and valiant deeds to be sung about in the ages to come.

But when all is said and done, will the name “”Blue Fox”” come to mean hope or darkest tragedy?”

We see a map of the world and in particular the island of Diofield, which serves as the setting, alongside the crests of the factions involved, the Kingdom of Alletain, the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire and the Rowetale Alliance. The protagonists are members of a company of mercenaries defending Alletain called “Blue Fox”.

The continent has been devastated by the war between the Empire and the Alliance, but as the conflict stagnates, they turn to Alletain, as the island of Diofield has rich resources of “Jade”, an element necessary for the modern magic.

Sound familiar? Because it certainly is for me.

Here is a description of the characters who will meet, mostly part of the Blue Foxes.

Andrias Rhondarson

One of the four heads of the blue foxes. He is a calm, cool and resourceful leader.

As a child he came to the attention of a nobleman who recognized something special in him, and after being trained as a soldier he became the chamberlain and bodyguard of the fourth in line to the throne, the Prince Levantia Shaytham.

He studied strategy and tactics and is well versed in ancient sorcery which has been passed down to Diofield through the generations. He has many talented agents at his service and is skilled in the art of subterfuge.

Frederic Lester

One of the four heads of the blue foxes.

He and Andrias have known each other since childhood and share a strong bond of brotherhood born from the life-threatening situations they faced together. He is generous and naive, perhaps due to his upbringing in a beautiful natural environment. People admire him for his outspokenness and honesty, but he tends to get obsessed with whatever he’s passionate about.

Possessing superb physical attributes, he could easily serve as an infantryman, but chooses to take advantage of his excellent riding skills and gallop freely across the battlefield on horseback.

Iscarion Colchester

One of the four heads of the blue foxes. The son of a minor nobleman, he followed Colchester tradition by joining the local order of knights.

When a tragic incident occurred, he left and became a knight-errant, traveling alone through the kingdom. Although often aloof, he will never ignore those in need and because of this he is respected by his subordinates.

He is a prodigiously skilled archer, who served him well when working as a mercenary.

Waltaquin Redditch

One of the four leaders of the Blue Foxes and a noble of the prestigious House of Redditch.

Born the daughter of one of Suffield’s most prominent nobles, she was spoiled all her life. As a result, she can be selfish and arrogant, but her grace, intelligence, and natural beauty are undeniable.

She became interested in magic from an early age, and after immersing herself in extensive studies of ancient sorcery, she became an outstanding magician.

Izair Wigan

A blue fox and the only daughter of Zoruaq Wigan, a famous mercenary with legendary skills.

She inherited her father’s fighting prowess and is known for her quick and dexterous swordsmanship. Preferring to avoid bloodshed when possible, she nonetheless proactively seeks out opponents. Sensitive and generous, she is often forced to close her eyes to the horrors unfolding around her on the battlefield.

Lorraine Luckshaw

A director of the mercenary company Blue Fox, who also serves as an intermediary with the government.

A woman belonging to House Luckshaw, a mid-ranking noble house. Hailed for her abilities since her youth, her keen intelligence made her all the more resentful of the unequal treatment faced by those of her gender. She ran away from home aged 16 when her father tried to force her into marriage and, in a bid to navigate her way through society, entered an academy funded by Duke Hende .

After graduating, she became a high-ranking government official and eventually became so well-known that her father was forced to reconcile to save face. Soon after, Duke Hende requested his help in forming a new group of mercenaries. She happily accepted, feeling indebted to Duke Hende who had recognized her talent early on.

Hezeliah Shaytham

The Princess of Alletain, born to King Regalt and the third Queen Stella, also mother of Levantia Shaytham.

When the war for the throne grew bloodier, King Regalt arranged for the royal family to escape from Middenfield and live in seclusion. However, the second Prince Victor and his close ally Lord Kimble kidnapped the family and imprisoned them in Beasel Tower deep in the mountains. She gives up on the idea of ever being rescued and resigns herself to her fate of being kept in her birdcage.

Guillaume Hende

The head of House Hende, a noble house that has gained considerable power in a short time.

William had gone to the Continent to study in his youth and used the knowledge he gained there to help his family gain fame and fortune upon his return. He made a huge profit by trading Jade with other nations and used the money to expand his territory. He also embarked on his own business by incorporating technologies from the mainland, which allowed him to become one of the richest people in the kingdom.

When he was chosen to be an adviser to the Council of Lords, he created his own order of knights and has since built his own army.
