UAH Professor Builds Sculpture at Huntsville Botanical Garden

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A professor of art and sculpture at the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH) recently unveiled a brand new piece for the Huntsville Botanical Garden.

The sculpture, designed by UAH’s Chris Boyd Taylor, is titled “The Door Is Open.” The piece is a giant, human-sized birdcage designed specifically for the garden exhibit “Uncaged: Birds, Nature, and You,” which opened last fall.

“The name was kind of inspired by my play,” Taylor said. “They needed some kind of loose, bird-themed, kid-friendly idea of different types of birdhouses.”

The exhibition ran from June to October last year. It featured seven pieces in the garden, all feathered or avian-themed, including a feast at a bird’s dining table, a giant cuckoo clock, and a huge egg.

“We received a request for proposals looking for local artists,” Taylor continued. “Our dean, Dr Sean Lane, warned us about this and was instrumental in our thinking about the project. I submitted a few different proposals, both based on birdcages, anticipating that one would be chosen, and it was.
